The History of HIFU
High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) technology was originally developed by Ulthera, Inc., a company founded in 2004 and based in the United States. Ulthera pioneered the use of ultrasound energy for non-invasive skin lifting and tightening — work that ultimately led to the technology being approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2004 as the first non-invasive procedure of its kind.
Ulthera was later acquired by Merz Pharmaceuticals, and the technology was further developed under the global aesthetics brand. Since its commercial release, HIFU has been used safely and effectively for over 14 years, with millions of treatments performed worldwide.
Originally adopted by physicians, dermatologists and plastic surgeons in the United States, HIFU has since become recognised across the globe as one of the most reliable non-invasive lifting and tightening treatments available — providing an effective alternative to surgical facelifts for clients who want visible, long-lasting results without the downtime or risks of surgery.
At Skin Rejuvenation Clinic, we are proud to offer the latest generation of HIFU technology — delivering precise, controlled ultrasound energy to lift, tighten and contour the face, neck and body.
The History of Microneedling
Microneedling — also known as Collagen Induction Therapy — has a longer history than many people realise. The technique was first described by Dr André Camirand, a Canadian plastic surgeon, in 1997. While treating patients with traditional dermabrasion, he observed that tattoo needles being used to camouflage scars also appeared to improve the skin’s texture and reduce the appearance of scarring. This discovery led to early research into the regenerative effects of controlled micro-injuries to the skin.
The technique was further refined in 1996 by Dr Des Fernandes, a renowned South African plastic surgeon, who developed the first percutaneous collagen induction therapy. Dr Fernandes is widely credited as one of the pioneers of modern microneedling, particularly for its use in treating fine lines, wrinkles, and stretch marks.
In 2004, the MTS (Medical Therapeutic System) Roller was introduced — making microneedling more accessible to practitioners and clinics worldwide. Since then, the technology has continued to evolve, with motorised devices like the SkinPen and advanced systems such as Gold RF Microneedling delivering more precise, comfortable and effective treatments than ever before.
Today, microneedling is one of the most widely researched and clinically validated non-invasive skin treatments. It works by creating thousands of microscopic channels in the skin, triggering the body’s natural wound-healing response and stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin. The result: smoother, firmer, more youthful-looking skin — without the downtime of more invasive procedures.
At Skin Rejuvenation Clinic, we offer the latest generation of microneedling technologies — including SQT bio-microneedles, SkinPen, and Gold RF Microneedling — each tailored to your individual skin goals.
